Casino Nova Scotia Announces Fourth Annual Artist in Residence Program – $20,000 to support the winner’s career!

(May 11th, 2017, Halifax, NS) – Once again Casino Nova Scotia is calling on emerging Nova Scotian musicians to compete for the annual Artist in Residence program! The $20,000 program will provide a local emerging musician or group with financial and professional support through Casino Nova Scotia and partners Music Nova Scotia as well as opportunities to develop their career through performance opportunities.

“The inherent talent of east coast musicians is well known across Canada, but to watch it blossom before your eyes is a privilege that we hope to continue for many years to come,” said Chris Roberts, Executive Director of Casino Nova Scotia.  “The Artist In Residence program is all about giving local talent a leg-up.  We’re honoured to have played a small role in the development of what are sure to be future stars.”

Artist in Residence for 2016/2017, Port Cities, has had a stellar year. Their first single, Back to the Bottom, is #22 this week at A/C radio, Top 40 at Hot A/C and has 375K streams on Spotify. Back to the Bottom received a SOCAN #1 Award for hitting the #1 spot on CBC Radio 2’s Top 20. The band has a growing audience as a result of tours in BC, Alberta, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces at home in Canada and have performed as far afield as Germany and Trinidad. Port Cities is setting off for a week in the UK with showcases at Focus Wales and the Great Escape and shows in London, Sheffield and Manchester.  Upon their return, they will open for the Sheep Dogs and for the Joel Plaskett Emergency and will perform at prestigious events such as the Cavendish Beach Festival, Tall Ships, and the CNE opening for Colin James.

Applicants can apply online through the Music Nova Scotia website from May 11 to May 29. The evaluation process will include a review of online applications and demos, interview with selected applicants and will conclude with a live performance of the finalists at Casino Nova Scotia’s Schooner Showroom on Friday, June 23. This program will provide the selected musician/group with $20,000 in funding to assist with developing their career through recording, marketing, and live performance opportunities.  Music Nova Scotia is administering the program and will provide career path support and exciting industry showcase opportunities such as Nova Scotia Music Week and Canadian Music Week. Stay tuned for announcements in the coming week.
